Shed Happens: Why Fall Is Peel Season (and My 6-Day Peel, Day by Day)

The leaves are falling, the pumpkin spice is back, and your skin is quietly carrying around a whole Arizona summer. You know what that means. It's Peel Season.

And because I'd never ask you to do something I wouldn't do myself, I went first. I did a peel on my own face and took a photo every single day. No filters, no skipped days, no hiding the flaky part. Because let's be honest... shed happens.

Why Fall Is Peel Season

Summer is hard on skin, especially here. Months of sun, heat, sweat, and pool days can leave skin dull, uneven, and a little rough around the edges. Fall gives us a window. The sun eases up, we're spending less time outside, and your fresh new skin has a much easier time doing its thing.

Think of it like the trees. They let go of what they don't need so something new can come in. A peel gives your skin a controlled amount of stimulation that tells it to do the same thing: shed the dull, tired surface cells and bring fresh, healthy skin forward.

One thing I want you to know before we start: a good peel isn't about how dramatically you shed. It's about the right amount of stimulation for your skin, on that day. Some people flake a lot. Some barely flake at all. Both are normal. Now, let's get into it.

Day 1: The Calm Before the Shed

Rosy, a little tight, and honestly kind of glowy. If you saw me at the grocery store you'd never know. Underneath, though, my skin is already getting to work.

Day 2: Still Glowing

Tight, rosy, and right on track. That tight feeling is your skin packing its bags. Keep it hydrated, keep your SPF on, and enjoy the calm while it lasts.

Day 3: Here It Comes

The tightness settles in around my mouth and chin, and that's exactly where the cracking starts. By the afternoon it was more flakes by the hour. This is the day everyone wants to pick. I know. I feel it too. Hands off.

Day 4: Shed Happens

Welcome to flake city. Cheeks, chin, forehead, all of it. This is peak peel, and it's the day I live in a ball cap. Hat on, SPF on, hands off. It doesn't look glamorous, but this is the good part. Underneath all of that is brand-new skin waiting for its moment.

Day 5: New Skin, Who Dis?

The flakes start clearing out, and up close you can actually see it happening: smooth new skin right next to the last little bits of old. Old skin out, new skin in. This is my favorite day to look at in the mirror.

Day 6: The Reveal

Not a flake in sight. Smooth, bright, and glowing from every angle. Same face, fresh skin. Totally worth a few days in a hat.

My Peel Season Survival Rules

Hands off. I mean it. Let the skin fall off on its own. Picking or pulling before it's ready can leave you pink and irritated, and nobody wants that.

Hat on, SPF on. Fresh skin is brand-new skin. Protect it every single day, even when it's finally under 100 degrees.

Hydrate and keep it simple. Your skin is working hard. This isn't the week for a 12-step routine.
